No sound via Headphones - temporary fix found, looking for permanent fix!

In my 'Sound' settings, if I have no headphones plugged in, the 'Connector' field has 'Speakers' selected in the dropdown and I get good proper sound. As soon as I plug my headphones in, it changes to 'Headphones'. And I get no sound output via my headphones. If I change this to 'Speakers', sound starts to work! But I've to do this every time I plug my headphones in.
Is there a way to fix this 'bug' permanently?
